Two of the pillars are supported by sculptures of Medusa's head. Some researchers believe that they were brought in for the sole purpose of being column bases. Hoever ther are some of the mythological stories are more interesting. According ot one story, Medusa is one of the three Gorgonas wheich were the female underground monsters. She had the power to turn people who looked at her into stone. Often big Gorgona pictures and sculptures were used in this period to protect important and special places. That is why the heads were placed here. There are other stories that could be told as well.
